Historic Downtown 

Cumberland was once Maryland’s second-largest city, supplying iron ore, coal, and timber from its hillsides to other cities during the Industrial Revolution. Though the population is smaller today, Cumberland retains its old-fashioned charm. The picturesque downtown area includes the Washington Street Historic District, where many of these old buildings and homes still stand. Check out the Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Allegany County Courthouse to see some of Maryland’s best examples of early Gothic Revival architecture.

Throughout the region, Cumberland also thrives on its reputation as the arts hub of Western Maryland. Under the auspices of the Allegheny Arts Council, the town has supported a state-recognized arts district since 2002. Today, visitors to Cumberland can stroll through its many galleries, or even take classes from the working artists who call the town home.
