Nursing Practice Philosophy excerpt: "I love nursing. Nursing has been good to me, and I want to continue to be a good ambassador for nursing and the patients I care for. It is an exciting time
to be in the profession of nursing. Economic struggles with resulting health care restraints and barriers are an opportunity for advancement in patient care outcomes lead by nurses. Nurses should meet patients where they are and take them where they need to be instead of expecting them to already be there. Advance practice nurses must lead the way in reducing health care disparities and access to care issues from the bedside to the capital beltway. By doing this, nurses will change the face of health care, one step and one patient at a time."
Nurse Educator Philosophy excerpt: “Students do not interrupt my work, they are my work. Whether I am teaching them or they are my patients, I believe every moment is a teaching moment.
I began teaching nursing long before our profession recognized the importance of having Certified Nurse Educators teach students. Straight out of my RN-BSN program (1985), I developed the first Health Occupation Courses for the high school I graduated from, and was required to become certified by the Virginia Board of Education. I loved it! It was those high school students and the adult evening program for CNAs that I established that really taught me how to teach along with many classes at the Curry School of Education at UVA in effective teaching methods. My journey has taken me from high school to my next chapter, which is continuing to teach at the graduate level and teaching at the doctoral level. All the little steps along the way have been critically important. I believe my success as an educator has hinged on my continued dedication to practice. It has been challenging but my years at the bedside of patients in the ED and in primary care have given me rich experiences to share to others aspiring to be nurses, nurse practitioner students, nurse educators etc.
One of the most exciting aspects of nursing is the evolution of the profession, and how we are educating nurses today. How do we preserve the integrity of the profession as we gain knowledge in technology? Not wanting to be left behind, I committed to learning everything about the new nurse and on-line education. And, yes I was skeptical. After developing rigorous courses that have no walls, ceilings or floors on-line and implementing and evaluating student learning outcomes, I know that there is a place for on-line education, particularly at the advance practice level. And, yet I still believe that learning face to face in the traditional classroom will continue to have a powerful place in the evolution of our profession. And, nothing will replace the individual preceptor role that is critical to making sure our profession stays on course. That is why I have advance practice students and want to be nursing students as my men-tees in my office every day of the week. Students do not interrupt my work, they are my work.”

As of January 2016

As a leader, healer and educator, my current mission is to protect and promote the health of all Virginians as Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Health. I will improve internal operations and build connections with outside stakeholders to accelerate the realization of our vision that Virginia is the healthiest state in the Union.

Prior to my role as VDH Chief Deputy, I served as the VP, Medical Education for NE and NW Markets of Mountain States, a not-for-profit, thirteen-hospital health system serving SW VA and NE TN. I developed robust medical education programs to address the work force shortage issues and increase the capability of the medical community to meet the needs of the region in the area of population health.

From 2012-2014 I served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Virginia facilities of Mountain States Health. In 2015 one of my teams won the President's Quality Award, the highest quality award granted at MSHA, and I received the Servant's Heart Award, the highest patient service award granted at Mountain States.

The American Board of Addiction Medicine certified me in 2012 and I started HighPower, P.C. a patient centered medical clinic in Russell County, VA. HighPower provides specialized clinical pharmacy consults and addiction treatment services and has been recognized at the state level for our innovative approach to addiction treatment.

Prior to working with Mountain States, I co-founded C-Health, P.C. in Lebanon, Virginia in 2000. C-Health still provides full-spectrum family medicine services to over 18,000 people in rural southwest Virginia.

The American Academy of Family Physicians selected me to be the 2011 Family Physician of the Year for C-Health's innovative work in the primary care treatment of addiction and chronic pain, and for our leadership in recruiting health professionals to what was once considered a medically underserved county.

The University of Virginia is my academic home where I earned my medical degree and completed my family medicine residency in 1996. In 2012 I returned to earn my MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. Lynda Miller, RN, MSN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC

I was born and raised in Roanoke, VA. I met and married my husband, Ray Miller in 1994. I am a mother of four (two girls, two boys), grandmother to two girls. We moved to Front Royal, VA when my husband was transferred with his job in 1999. I was a stay-at-home mother until my husband was activated in the National Guard in 2004. That was when I decided to enroll in the Lord Fairfax Community College ADN program to keep myself busy. Some memorable moments from that experience was that I graduated the top of my class, on the Dean's list, tutored nursing students, and I was elected by my classmates to be the speaker at our graduation ceremony. I loved nursing and education so much, that I continued onto Shenandoah University where I obtained my BSN, MSN, and FNP in 2012. Again, I tutored other nursing students along the way, president of our graduate nursing class, and was elected by my classmates to speak at our pinning ceremony. During that program, I had such a wonderful women's health experience, that I knew that is the area I wanted to work. After passing my boards, I found my position at the Women's Center of Winchester working under Drs. Dabinett and Wilson. After being in women's health for a few years, I found that it was necessary to obtain my PMHNP certification so that I could effectively manage conditions that were becoming common in my day-to-day practice. I just completed the PMHNP post certification program and Shenandoah University and passed my boards in August. I look forward to providing a more integrative care for the population that I serve. I plan to continue on and complete my DNP over the next couple of years.

Loretta Vece, DNP, FNP-BC

I have a Doctor of Nursing Practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner. As a doctoral student, I was awarded an American Association of Nurse Practitioner (AANP) grant for my project where I developed and launched an integrated oral healthcare program into the Mason and Partners safety-net clinics. This included process development, referral collaboration, and establishment of interprofessional education with the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) dental hygiene program. Additionally, I developed best practice recommendations for inclusion of oral healthcare competencies into the nursing curriculum at George Mason University. My research and practice focus is on oral health and preventive care using evidence based best practice.
