Current position: Professor of Oncology, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center of Johns Hopkins, and the Harry J. Duffey Family Professor of Palliative Medicine, and Director of Palliative Medicine, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD
I am a medical oncologist and palliative care specialist with a lifelong interest in better symptom management, and improving access to high quality affordable care. I helped start Virginia Commonwealth University's Thomas Palliative Care Program, an internationally respected palliative care service, education and research program.
I am now the Director of Palliative Medicine for Johns Hopkins Medicine, charged with integrating palliative care into all the Johns Hopkins venues. We have begun a hospital wide PC consult service that will see 1000 patients this year, open an inpatient unit March 1, and are growing the research agenda.
I have a long track record of starting innovative programs with concurrent evaluation of their impact on care and costs, including the Rural Cancer Outreach Program, the Thomas Palliative Care Program, the Virginia Initiative on Palliative Care, and the Rural Palliative Care Program, among others. Our group was the first to show improved care with substantial cost savings from coordinated rural-urban care, inpatient palliative care, and rural palliative care. I have been influential within the oncology community working to improve care at a cost society can afford, maintaining my credentials as a treating oncologist while integrating palliative care.
I received the national Humanism in Medicine Award in 2000, and in 2000 and 2006 I was voted the Distinguished Clinician on the VCU-MCV Faculty. I have been recognized in "Best Doctors in America" for many years. In June 2008 I received the ASCO "Statesman" award for continued service to oncology, now Fellow, American Society of Clinical Oncology. In 2012 Bruce Hillner and I received the ABIM "Professionalism" Price for our NEJM article "Bending the Cost Curve in Cancer Care" and leading the "Choosing Wisely" initiatives. In March 2013 I will become a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
